Nielsen’s 2008 SoundScan figures have been released:
CD sales: down 20% to 362 million units
This follows a 15% drop in 2007 and represents a 45% decline since a high in 2000 of 942 million units
Digital album sales: up 32% to 62.8 million units
Down from a 53% rise in 2007
Track sales: up 27% to 1.07 billion units
Down from a 45% rise in 2007
LP sales: up 92% to 1.9 million units
Even though digital sales are up they are not enough to cover the lose in CD sales, especially since CD’s are 80% of overall music sales. Thanx Napster!
